Today, is the seventh day of the first month of lunar calendar, known as the day of human (人日), which means it’s everybody’s birthday. It’s on 人日 that everybody eats yee-sang.
But today, is also February 4th of the Gregorian calendar, with the arrival of spring. Chinese call it 立春 – establishing spring.
With the arrival of spring, plants start sprouting, flowers start blossoming, animals start fornicating, sperm starts swimming, pimples start popping. Okay, what I was trying to say is, everything comes to life.
So, this morning Helen wished me happy lap-chun. I told her I’m not gay and I can’t possibly reach mine without breaking my back. She then reminded me to make eggs stand. I told her cremasteric reflex doesn’t make them stand. And then it dawned on me…
立春 – Cantonese lap-chun, Mandarin lick-chun. In Hakka, chun-doy means testicular sac or scrotum. Whatever…
You see, spring is so powerful that it makes everything come alive, even chicken eggs will stand on their ends.
At 11am+, I rushed RPCNs to the market to get me two fresh chicken eggs. It was said that in order to ‘stand’ the eggs, you must do it around 12 noon. They came back just in time.
Here’s the photo. No camera trick, no dig hole, no flattening the bottom of eggs, no glue, gum, nyet… Raw eggs and plain steadiness of my hands and fingers… and today is 立春!!!
