241015 Essentials for E-Librarians

E-books exist in many formats – from simple .txt to .pdf. My favourite is still .epub, simply because it includes book cover, chapter table and is more versatile.

My e-book tools are on a thumb drive, in a system called PortableApps. PortableApps is a Window based system where you can install and run apps once plugged in, without the need to install on the PC. Once unplugged, it doesn’t leave anything on the host PC running Windows, any host PC, for that matter. I have a copy in Dropbox, just in case.

In PortableApps, there are two apps – Notepad++ and Calibre. The former allows me to search and replace, especially spaces, tabs and CR/LFs, and to convert Big5, CJK to UTF-8 or even Unicode, in .txt. Calibre, OTOH, allows editing of meta info including book cover, author, publishing date etc. It can export the book into other formats like .epub, .mobi, .azw3, .pdf etc.

Google Play Books allows uploading of .epub and .pdf into your personal library, and exporting the same. Reading positions are synced across devices. But features are limited compared to some other e-readers.

My favourite e-reader is Moon+ Reader Pro (paid app). It is extremely customizable, and you can sync bookmarks, notes, highlights across devices. It also includes a myriad of visual, control and other options, and dictionaries.
