251006 Mechanical Pencils

Regarding those mechanical pencils in my previous post:

  • Pink Mechanical Pencil: This Pentel Orenz PP502 uses 0.2mm B-grade lead. The lead is very thin, making it prone to breaking, I use it mainly for drawing precise straight lines. It features a retractable sleeve at the tip to prevent the lead from bending and breaking.
  • Purple Mechanical Pencil: This Pilot pencil uses 0.3mm HB-grade lead. The lead is slightly thicker and harder than the 0.2mm one, making it suitable for both drawing straight lines and curves, as well as for writing. The HB lead is also less likely to break.
  • White Mechanical Pencil: Also 0.3mm, but with a softer B-grade lead. Like the purple one, it’s versatile both for drawing and writing.
  • Transparent Black Mechanical Pencil: For the common 0.5mm lead, but I use this with leads of a very soft 4B hardness. It produces a very dark handwriting, with a lush and velvety feel, much like the Derwent Studio colour pencils. Although it doesn’t break easily due to its thickness, the very-soft lead wears down extremely quickly. Without an auto-advance mechanism, you’d need to click it every few strokes. But this Pentel pencil with its Kuru Toga Engine is quite sophisticated: not only has it a retractable sleeve but also a rotating mechanism that keeps the lead tip round and sharp, preventing it from becoming flat and blunt.
  • Erasers: The lowermost item is actually a Tombow MONO ZERO 2.3mm thin round eraser. I also have a rectangular type, though it’s hardly used. As for electric erasers, I find them impractical.
