060201 CNY Buffet

First and foremost, congratulations to chanlilian.net for its 1,000th post and Rojaks for its 1-year anniversary.

Went to some hotel for some CNY buffet. Nothing to brag about. Food is so-so. No butter rice, no ghee rice, no mushroom soup. Satay so-so (they have chicken, lamb and beef), nasi biriyani not fragrant enough. But at least the desserts were nice and you can make your own ice kacang (shaved ice) with unlimited atapchee and frog spawn. And there was this squid-ink pasta that was black in colour. :P~~~

But the best of all is the DIY yee-sang. Woohoo!!! All the ingredients laid out at the station and you get to assemble your own yee-sang. We took damn a lot of salmon, damn a lot of pok-chui (some crunchy stuff) and damn a lot of orange-peel-like thingy. Free flow of five-spice powder, pepper, oil, sour plum sauce and lime. You can arrange the colourful ingredients like damn canggih like that summore.

I was told that the main factor that determines the taste of the yee-sang is the balance of all the ingredients, and it’s not easy to balance them. Big-big restaurants like Tai Thong and Six Happiness employ yee-sang sifus to help them balance the ingredients. Since there was no Chinese staff let alone yee-sang sifu working at that time, I had to somehow follow my sixth sense.

Anyway, it turned out damn nice. I went back to the station to help myself with the second and third round of ‘personal yee-sang’. Half way through, I saw a gwaimui sitting with her gwailo bf. Her plate had a few ingredients from the yee-sang station and she was picking up each type separately into her mouth… -_-” The hotel should have employed me to be their yee-sang sifu.

RPCNs : “Yee-sang sek yee-sang (医生食鱼生)… You sek zhi gei (食自己) ar?”

Dr. Liew : -_-“

Anyhoot, the hotel gave us a bottle of red wine FOC…

Waiter : “Should I open it now, sir?”

Dr. Liew : “Eh? Aren’t you going to chill it?”

Waiter : “Err… Chill?”

Dr. Liew : “Chill as in… sejukkan?”

Waiter : “Okay… I’ll get the ice.”

Dr. Liew : “No, no. Put it in the freezer for 30 minutes.”

15 minutes later…

Waiter : “Is this cold enough, sir?”

Dr. Liew : *whip out TempGun from Doraemon bag deet* “24 degree Celcius. 15 minutes more.

Get it down to 12 degree and we shall talk.”

Waiter : “Okay…”

It was good at 12 degree Celcius. *hic*

Most people have heard that red wines should be served at ‘room’ temperature, but that is really a reference to ‘cellar’ temperature. Cellar temperature is usually about 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

…And not our (quote auyongtc) iklim khatulistiwa.
