BOOX Tab Mini C – 7.8″ Color Android eReader (64GB) with Exclusive GPU
Kapitan told me he has an e-ink tablet, of which a single charge of its battery could last up to three months. I decided to get a colour version.
Made an appointment with BOOX Malaysia and got myself a 7.8″ Tab Mini C.
But its battery can’t really last for 3 months. At most, perhaps, five days? But it doesn’t matter as I am always around power source.
The reasons for short battery life :
- Android OS – by itself, it is not a battery-saving operating system. It allows background operations, sucking up power even when the screen is off.
- WiFi and Bluetooth – these background communications need power. But you can choose to cut them off when you close the lid. They will reconnect when you flip it open. Once in a while, though, it may fail to reconnect with your WiFi network, needing a restart.
- Front light (back light) – without back light, you can’t really read anything without a bright light source.
Short comings :
- Shadows – as expected with most e-ink devices. Can’t really play any video clearly. But you can manually refresh the screen to get rid of them.
- Dim screen – need strong light source if you don’t want to turn on the back light. BOOX Note Max is ultra-white with no back light, and only 4.6mm thick.
- Lag – can’t use third-party drawing apps as the lag is unbearable. Its native note app has this ‘waveform controller’ tech that others don’t have.
